At The Surprise, the finest, freshest local and seasonal ingredients are our passion and our pride. We work with longstanding suppliers of the highest quality, and our simple, unfussy, modern British-inspired cooking lets their flavours sing out. We change our menu regularly, and serve new specials every day, so whether you plump for a meticulously matured steak, perfectly pan-fried fish or one of our imaginative vegetarian or vegan dishes, you’re sure to enjoy the very best of British fare. And don’t forget to save space for one of our richly indulgent puddings.

We also offer a broad and adventurous wine list, which we curate with our partner Hallgarten Fine Wines, with many world-class labels and around 20 wines available by the glass, so there’s always a new drop to try. Our beers include our favourites from London, with guest ales from all over the country, and amber bitter afficionados love our house brand, named, surprisingly, Surprise Ale. The jewel of our spirits range meanwhile is a collection of around 20 fine whiskies, from Highland hero Dalmore King Alexander III to classic brands and rising stars from Japan and the USA.

Walter Rose & Son

Established in Devizes, Wiltshire in 1847, family firm Walter Rose & Son is a multi-award-winning traditional butcher with exceptional provenance and sustainability credentials. All its ‘farm to fork’ beef comes from outstanding Aberdeen Angus and Hereford crosses farmed by Tim Johnson at Stokes Marsh Farm, just eight miles from the butcher’s shop. Choosing small heifers for their consistent quality and rich marbling of fat, the company treats each piece individually, hanging it and checking it daily until it reaches the perfect maturity.
